Hi all! Here is a little suggestion.
I think there should be a download section. Standard members, premium members, comunity leaders and admins can download files from the section and upload files to the section.
There could be a table with each download.
When uploading, you have to include a title, short description (which will appear on the table), a more detailed description (will not appear on the table) and a file upload edit box and a brows... button.
Files can include music, documents, spreadsheets, software including games and other software, presentations, tutorials and any other file except system files like dll ones.
Sound good, tell me what you think!
I do believe you might want to re-read your terms of service agreement. For the sake of relevance, I'll paraphrase the related section here:
The following types of material are not allowed on the website or any associated services. Community Leaders or Site Administrators will determine if
material falls into one of these categories.
• ... Material advocating illegal acts, including: child pornography, software piracy, manufacture and use of controled substances, etc.
This statement automatically excludes the vast majority of files that would be traded via this system, and could possibly subject the Zone BBS server owner(s) to legal injunctions.
If you've been asleep amidst the battle of the RIAA, then let me inform you that they're less than impressed with the act of freely distributing copyrighted material, and can and do take measures against these endeavours.
The provision of this feature also allows users, whether malicious or ignorant, to propogate illegally engineered versions of software to bypass property control routines. These users, both malicious and ignorant, may also distribute via this menue files which may, whether purposefully or without intent, be infected with viruses, trojan horses, and other malware.
Given the small community that is the Zone, if a malicious programmer were to engineer a destructive piece of code and incorporate it into a popular application, the effects would both be disastrous and potentially unaddressable (as we're pretty low on the radar of the big anti-virus companies).
You must also consider the cost of additional server space to accomodate such a feature. Assuming that we have 5000 users, and assuming each user uploads 10 files, each 5 megabytes a piece, that's 250 gigabytes of space, just for this feature. If we consider the extreme, a terabyte or more would be required.
Download section? NO.

I think you don't read the terms of service and that you need to go look somewhere else for your downloads...
go find another programme....tis not gonna happen here anytime soon

if you read the terms of service to start with, none of us even would have had to post. hahha
well, what about the file browser? there was something here that had a lot of what you described, but i can't find it on the actual site. try going to web.archive.org and searching for zonebbs.com. where'd the file browser go, it was here earlier last year!
